Jake Adelstein, a former reporter at Japan's largest daily newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun, and author of "Tokyo Vice", speaks with his bodyguard, a former yakuza mobster who goes by the name "Mochizuki," at an undisclosed location in Japan on Aug. 29, 2008. In 2005 American Adelstein uncovered a scandal involving senior members of Japan's mafia, the yakuza, visiting a medical center in Los Angeles to undergo liver transplants, despite being bared from entry due to having criminal records or suspected affiliation with Japanese organized crime groups. Within days, however, Adelstein was visited by mob members and told to either "erase the story or be erased." He took the former option and resigned from the Yomiuri, though a leak of his story at the time of this interview pushed Adelstein and his family into hiding..Photographer: Robert Gilhooly
