Haldon Belvedere, Exeter, Devon..Photo shows the spiral staircase that winds itself up to the roof terrace at Haldon Belvedere. Built in 1788 by celebrated English cleric and politician Sir Robert Palk, the striking triangular structure, whose three points are marked by identical turret-topped towers, was visited by King George III, albeit late in his reign when he was suffering from an incurable mental illness. The construction of a local carriageway, simply called "King's Road," predates that visit, indicating that Palk probably had such a brush with royalty in mind. The building is today used as accommodation and wedding venue.
