TOHOKU MIRACLE PINE 4385-2.tif

Schoolchildren stand beneath the single black pine tree -- dubbed the "miracle pine" -- that stands on the waterfront of Rikuzentakata city, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. The tree was one of 62,000 black pines that formed a protective wall along the bay of the Pacific coast city, but were flattened following the March 2011 tsunami. It is one of just a few landmarks that remain as the city undergoes a massive rebuilding project. Rob Gilhooly Photo
