HAMAORISAI 0890A.JPG

A box filled with seaweed is carried by priests on the sands of Yuhigahama beach as they make their way back to the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine grounds 2 km away during a purification ritual known as hamaorisai at the start of the 3-day Reitaisai festival in Kamakura, Japan on 14 Sept. 2012. As a symbol of the purification, priests collect the seaweed from the sea and take it back to the shrine, hanging pieces around the shrine grounds to appease the gods. Photographer: Robert Gilhooly
