YABUSAME 3131.jpg

A young attendant carries back the arrows that found their target to return to the mounted archers during the Yabusame mounted archery ritual on the 3-day Reitaisai grand festival in Kamakura, Japan on 16 Sept. 2012. In the Azumakagami -- a book of Japanese history covering 87 years from 1180 to 1266 in the Kamakura Era, a hunt and mounted archery event was held on August 15 1187 and it is this in which the shrine's Reitaisai has its roots. For over 800 years since the history and tradition of the event have been continued at the shrine. Photographer: Robert Gilhooly
