Priests enter the water to collect seaweed during a purification ritual known as hamaorisai at the start of the 3-day Reitaisai festival in Kamakura, Japan on 14 Sept. 2012. As a symbol of the purification, priests and shrine officials collect the seaweed from the sea and take it back to the shrine, hanging pieces around the shrine grounds to appease the gods.
