Homeless and jobless men hang around a communal area of the Nishinari Labor Welfare Center in the Kamagasaki district of Osaka, Japan on July 23 2008. Over 1,000 homeless people line up each evening in hope of securing a bed in the several shelters found in Kamagasaki, a slum-like area near the bright lights of Osaka's business center that also is notorious for its cardboard box dwellings, 6-pound a night basic accommodations and drug trafficking conducted by Japan's mafia, the yakuza. During the summer months, when temperatures inside the non air-conditioned shelters soar, many homeless prefer to take to the outdoors. .Photographer: Robert Gilhooly
